Flight club 502 is a non-profit student led organization aimed at helping the youth earn life and leadership skills through flight training. When I first joined, I thought it was just going up in the air, but I was very wrong. The whole flight club experience isn’t just about flying.
Being a student pilot comes with a level of stress and workload that most people don’t expect. There are constant checklists, briefings, and safety procedures that have to be followed perfectly. One mistake can have serious consequences, so attention to detail becomes second nature. Balancing school, aviation, and actually flying can be overwhelming at times, but it builds time management and mental toughness.
A big part of flight club’s image is their raffles. Their current spring raffle will give the winner a choice between a Cessna Skyhawk 172 or $100,000 which shows the impact and importance of these raffles. Tickets are just $75, which could possibly make it an incredible investment. The money raised goes directly back into helping students learn to fly, making the raffle more than just a giveaway, it’s what keeps the program running.
I joined in 2023, and immediately fell in love with flying. My first lesson I was absolutely terrified, and my instructor just gave me the controls. I had no idea what I was doing, but looking back it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had. In November of 2024, I completed my first solo flight. Since then I have done a number of solo flights, and in the fall of last year I started doing cross-country flights, which are flights that are longer than 50 miles. The most common is flying to Lexington and back. I’m aiming to get my license during the summer before I leave for college, where I am continuing my training.
Joining Flight Club was one of the best decisions of my life, and I recommend everyone to at least try it out. Flying may not be for everybody, but that is not the only way you can be involved. They offer many different positions to get involved. My final question is this, what is the worst that could happen?
