I’ve played four seasons of St. X soccer now. One season on the freshman team with Coach Simms, a season on JV, and two playing Varsity. Playing soccer here was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I had more fun playing here than anywhere else. Out of all the memories, these are my top five.
#5 – Being Voted to be a Team Captain
At the end of preseason my senior season, the team voted on team captains like they always have. Logan Schulhafer, Reed Newman, Ryan Schultze, and I were voted by our teammates and coaches. Being chosen to captain a storied program like St. X soccer is an honor. Being a leader of that team was a unique experience that I wouldn’t trade anything for.
#4 – Beating Trinity Freshman Season
The turf felt like it was a thousand degrees and to make it worse, we wore black, long sleeve jerseys. Playing against your school’s rival for the first time is so cool. Even though it was the freshman team, the game meant a lot to every player and we had a lot of fun.
#3 – Sweeping Collegiate
Last season, we lost to Collegiate in the District Championship and then again in the Regional Championship. This season we beat them in the regular season, the District Championship, and finally in the Regional Championship. This sweep couldn’t have been sweeter after ending last season with a bitter taste in our mouths.
#2 – Winning a State Championship
The team’s road to Lexington wasn’t easy. We had losses, but we learned from them. Practices after school were always fun, but we held each other accountable for certain areas we needed to improve on, especially marking your man. Through hard work from everyone who was a part of the team, we made our way to the State Championship and brought home the trophy for our school.
#1 – Animal Ball
If you know, you know. Nothing beats getting out of school on Friday, going out to practice, and playing some animal ball. 3v3 soccer with full sized goals is so much fun, but golden goal games make it even better. Some of my best memories from St. X soccer come from animal ball and I’ll never forget them.
