As the second half of the year is under way, class registration is not that far out. Today, I’m going to tell you why Mr. Payne’s ceramics class is one of, if not the best electives at St. X. First of all, Mr. Payne is just the GOAT. At the beginning of each class, we have a daily reading where he talks to us in a very impactful way. This helps get the class in the right mindset every day.
The class itself, in my opinion, is the most fun class at St. X. I had briefly used clay in grade school, but nothing like what you learn in Mr. Payne’s class. You have to follow a couple of rules for each piece you make, but other than that, it is completely up to you. You can make your pieces look however you want, and that freedom is something I really value about the class.
For the freshmen reading this, you know you have to fill out your fine arts requirement, and this is a great way to do it. I initially took Ceramics 1 my sophomore year just to fill the credit, but after realizing how much I enjoyed Mr. Payne and his class, I had to come back for Ceramics 2, which was even more fun.
In conclusion, you should definitely try ceramics. If you end up not liking it, you can always transfer out, but why not give it a try?
