The Tigers might’ve beat the Rockets, but everyone won in the end.
On December 12, The Saint Xavier Tigers Lacrosse team played the Assumption Rockets Lacrosse team in a charity match for the second straight year at Brother Thomas More Page Stadium. Even though the temperature was near freezing, the event was a huge success. All proceeds from this event went to Home of the Innocents, which is a great cause.
“I’m very glad I was able to participate in this charity event for a great cause,” senior Cullen Spalding said. “Even though we were playing a game, everyone on the field knew it was for a bigger picture.”
This event invited everybody to show up, not just Rockets and Tigers. It was friendly towards children, who participated in fun halftime games. Even though this event was central towards Saint Xavier and Assumption, the fact that neighboring peoples showed their support made the event even more special.
The rules of the game were for both teams to play KHSAA girls high school lacrosse rules. So, the Tigers had to adapt to the drastically different regulations of the girls game, as well as use a girls lacrosse stick. Additionally, the guys also had to use their off-hand to throw and catch. The Tigers won the contest 5-1 after a slow start and many penalties due to their lack of knowledge of girls lacrosse rules.
“The women’s rules were a bit of an adjustment for the fellas but in the end it was a great night for both programs and the community,” senior Jackson Graeter said.
Overall, the Tigers and the Rockets gave it their all on the field for the betterment of their cause. They allowed for the event to be bigger than some game. In the end, there was no loser because both teams played for something bigger than themselves.
