September 11, 2001 is a day in U.S. history that lives in infamy for the many lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In honor of the lives lost, as well as those who risked their lives for others, President Paul Colistra and the St. X community have brought an opportunity to our school in recognition of these brave souls.
The 9/11 Heroes Run is a 5K race taking place at St. X on Saturday, September 7 at 8:00 A.M. Racers who register will be able to run around the track at Brother Thomas More Page Stadium to support this cause.
High School friend of President Colistra, 1st Lt. Travis Manion, is a main reason this race is taking place. As an experienced Iraq war veteran from the 1st Recon Battalion, Travis and fellow Marines encountered enemy forces in the Al Anbar province in 2007. While protecting and aiding fellow Marines, Travis was fatally wounded by the enemy. His actions allowed every other member of his team to survive, making him a hero. For this, he was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor.
“After college, while I was living and working in San Diego, and Travis was training for deployment at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, we were roommates,” Colistra said. “It was our time together in San Diego that grew a deep appreciation for Travis’ commitment to service and others.”
Travis Manion, and all who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, will be remembered and honored during the 5K on Saturday. Please make an effort to come and support those who can’t be here with us today, whether that be running or helping the event go smoothly.
Each year, 9/11 Hero Runs take place all around the country, where tens of thousands come together to support the cause. For more information, you can visit the official website of the 9/11 Heroes Run.
“Each event helps to ensure our nation fulfills the promise to never forget for generations to come,” Colistra said.
