With the 2026 NBA Playoffs officially beginning, the excitement is already building around which teams have what it takes to make a championship run. The fans are making predictions based on matchups, star power, and momentum. This year’s playoffs feel somewhat predictable, but several teams in both conferences look like they are capable of making a deep run.
In the Eastern Conference, two teams stand out as serious contenders: the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons. The Cavaliers have been one of the most consistent teams all season. With stars like Donovan Mitchell leading the offense and a strong defensive presence inside, Cleveland has the balance needed for playoff basketball. Despite having superstar Donovan Mitchell, the Cavaliers recently acquired 2018 MVP, James Harden. Since acquiring James Harden at the All Star break, the Cavaliers are 19-7 with The Beard playing. If Cleveland’s two stars get hot, expect a deep run from the Cavs.
The Detroit Pistons have been one of the biggest surprises this season. Led by rising star Cade Cunningham, the Pistons have shown that they can beat the best throughout the year. The Pistons also had their third best regular season record in team history reaching 60 wins. Their young core plays fast and they’ve proven they can compete with top teams. If they continue to play with energy and stay healthy, Detroit could make a serious run to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Another major contender in the East is the Boston Celtics. the 2024 NBA champs just returned Jayson Tatum and have been led by Jaylen Brown playing at a high level, Boston has the experience and star power needed to compete for a championship again this season. Jaylen Brown has learned how to become the first option this season which I think help the Celtics not rely on Jayson Tatum so much. The Celtics know what it takes to win in the playoffs, and if they get hot at the right time, they could easily come out of the East.
In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs look like the strongest contenders. The Thunder, led by MVP favorite, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, have been the most dominant team all season. Their shooting and depth make them extremely dangerous. Oklahoma City has the ability to destroy teams offensively while still playing great defense.
The San Antonio Spurs have also emerged as a legitimate contender behind superstar Victor Wembanyama who’s been nicknamed this season as “the alien” because of his freak build. His impact on both ends of the floor makes the Spurs difficult to match up with. San Antonio’s defense and improving offense give them a strong chance to make a deep playoff run.
A dark horse team to watch is the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James recently said he hasn’t felt this fit with a team since his legendary 2018 playoff run, which has fans believing the Lakers could surprise people. However, injuries and the absence of players like Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves could make things more difficult. Still, with LeBron’s experience and leadership, the Lakers remain a dangerous team that nobody wants to face.
I think these six teams have the the upper hand going into the playoffs this year, but I think there is on true team that stands out from the rest and will take it home this season. The Oklahoma City Thunder are my pick to win the NBA finals and take home the Larry O’Brien for the second year in a row.
