The St. X lacrosse team grabbed its first win of the season, defeating Ohio powerhouse Dublin Jerome 12-9 behind a strong team effort. This was the first varsity lacrosse game on the brand-new green-and-gold wood chip turf, and the Tigers won in style.
The Tigers were led by senior midfielder Connor Marks, who recorded two goals and two assists, and junior Bellarmine commit Will Townsend, who added two goals and three assists. The offense maintained a balanced attack throughout the game, helping the gold and white claw back from a 5-2 deficit after the first quarter.
The new field made a strong first impression.
“Obviously, the looks and the details from a fan standpoint are awesome,” Marks said. “This new turf is soft and comfortable on your feet, which makes you faster and better in every aspect of the game of lacrosse.”
Sophomore Connor Cronin also added a goal and a pair of assists against the Celtics, as the attackman has developed into a key player under third-year head coach Kevin Doherty.
“The first couple games of the season were very tough, as we were still figuring where each player fit in best,” Cronin said. “This win brought the team a spark that we needed and something to build upon.”
The Tigers were coming off an overtime loss to Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), along with other tough matchups against nationally ranked teams in Culver (Ind.) and Western Reserve (Ohio).
“We don’t back down to any challenge, and the boys were fired up to get out on that new turf and protect the home field,” Marks said.
The Tigers have one more game before heading into spring break, a matchup against rival Trinity on Wednesday night. When asked about the upcoming game, there was a common theme among the trio: it’s just another game, and business needs to be handled.
“We have goals in mind and other teams on our schedule,” Marks said. “This is just another game.”
Townsend and Cronin both emphasized the need to limit distractions and play together with high intensity.
“We need to bring energy and enthusiasm to the whole team, whether we play or we don’t,” Cronin said. “It’s not a one-man game. The sideline contributes, the coaches contribute, the players contribute, and the fans.”
Now it’s time for fans to pack the Rage Cage and be loud Wednesday night at 7 pm in Marshall Stadium. The theme is Nantucket, so show up in your favorite polos and button-downs with khaki shorts and shades. Never miss opportunities like this. Be loud and support your brothers.
