College baseball fans love making predictions, even before the season is in full swing. Every year, debates start early about which team looks strong enough to raise the championship trophy. This year is no different, and excitement is already building around a few powerhouse programs.
Leading the early conversations are teams with strong returning players, deep pitching staffs, and proven coaching. Programs like LSU Tigers and UCLA Bruins are getting a lot of attention from fans and analysts. Both teams have shown the kind of balance and confidence that makes people wonder if they could be playing deep into the postseason.
The LSU Tigers have a proven history of championships in baseball. Jay Johnson, LSU’s head coach, is destined to go back to back. After starting opening week 4-0, the Tigers were definitely, in my opinion, the #1 overall team. Jake Brown, a junior outfielder, was lights out in the box hitting a .529 with multiple home runs. The Tigers are hitting an exceptional .376 as a team, with 10 home runs, and 51 runs scored already. Jake Brown, Cade Arrambide, and Trent Caraway lead the offense. Leading the pitching staff was Cooper Moore who has thrown 6 innings and 11 strikeouts in a 5-3 victory. The Tigers have what it takes to make another deep run at Omaha. They are my top early contender to take it.
Another early team that is on top of the polls are the UCLA Bruins. They were ranked number 1 in many preseason polls. The Bruins started the season 3-1 after dropping one game to UC San Diego. They bounced back though and defeated Tulane 13-5 in their most recent game. Roch Cholowsky is a returning player who had one of the best offensive seasons in UCLA history in 2025. Other offensive names to watch out for are Mulivai Levu, and Angel Cervantes. The Bruins will be battle tested this week as they take on a three game series against TCU. They will stand out all season and make a big run in the playoffs.
A strong contender of mine is the University of Louisville. Even though I am a little biased, they proved in the 2025 season that they were prepared for Omaha. Although, over opening weekend, they had a series against the Michigan State Spartans and dropped two of them causing an upset. Zion Rose, a returning star from last year, was out in these three games with a short term injury. When he returns, I feel like the Cardinals will be more complete and ready to make a run. Their offense is coming alive as they won the third game of the series in blowout fashion, 9-1. They also just played Xavier and scored 23 runs, so I would say they are on the rise. Watch out of the Cards.
Of course, “way-too-early” predictions are never guarantees. Injuries hurt teams every single year and make them struggle. Teams can be unranked heading into the last month, but hot streaks are a thing and Murray State showed that a mediocre team can finish strong. That unpredictability is what makes college baseball so fun to follow. A team that starts outside the spotlight can suddenly catch fire and change the championship picture.
Whether the predictions come true or not, the 2026 college baseball season will be packed with great games and major upsets. That’s exactly why fans love making those way too early calls.
