It was announced Monday night that Kentucky’s star point guard will miss the rest of the season after his injured shoulder finally required season-ending surgery. The injury first occurred during the Blue-White scrimmage at the beginning of the year and caused him to miss the start of the season. Since then, he pushed himself to return and did everything he could to help his team. He re-aggravated the injury during Kentucky’s win over St. John’s and played through it in the second half, but it worsened again against Mississippi State, reaching a breaking point. As a result, he will now miss the remainder of the season. He plans to apply for a medical redshirt and hopes to receive two additional years of collegiate eligibility.
Jaland Lowe is obviously a very talented player. Throughout the summer, reports from Jack Pilgrim and KSR consistently suggested that this team was going to be built around an Oweh/Lowe core. Unfortunately we will never get to see those two fully healthy on the floor together. So where does Kentucky go from here?
The first and most likely scenario is a “next man up” mindset. Throughout Lowe’s shoulder struggles, Florida transfer guard Denzel Alberdeen has been forced to take on point guard duties, playing more of an unnatural position. However, as the season has progressed, he has improved and grown into the position. If he continues to move the ball and make smart decisions, most Kentucky fans have full confidence in him taking over as the team’s starting point guard.
This “next man up” scenario also means Jasper Johnson will see a much larger role off the bench. Throughout the season, Jasper has shown many flashes of his star potential. His defense and lack of size have sometimes been a problem against stronger opponents but most recently against Mississippi State, he provided Kentucky with quality minutes, and even though the stat sheet didn’t fully reflect it, his impact was noticeable whenever he was on the floor. As a freshman, he is still developing, but many Kentucky fans believe he will continue to improve and can help fill the minutes left by Jaland Lowe’s absence.
Another and maybe less likely scenario is adding another point guard mid season. If you’ve been following college basketball this season you know that weekly you will see reports flying around of various college programs recruiting international and G-League players to come join their teams mid season. Although there haven’t been many reports of this surrounding Kentucky this also could be a possibility for the Wildcats. Adding a true point guard would bring clear benefits, especially because Collin Chandler, Denzel Alberdeen, and Jasper Johnson, who are currently expected to handle most of the point guard duties, are not natural point guards and will be playing out of position. Having a true floor general would help organize the offense, improve ball movement, and allow those players to stay in roles that better fit their strengths.
This season has not gone the way Kentucky fans hoped, and the recent news about Jaland Lowe feels like yet another blow. But there are plenty of options for the coaching staff to consider , and there is also a real opportunity for players to step out of their comfort zones and lead this team to greatness going forward. Hopefully Jaland Lowe can make a speedy recovery and come back better than ever to lead the Wildcats in 2026-2027.
