After a historically difficult 2024 season — finishing eighth at the state meet, failing to win the regional title for the first time in over 15 years, and fielding no senior runners at either major meet — the St. Xavier Tigers delivered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in program history.
Just one year later, the 2025 Tigers roared back to claim the title of Kentucky’s most improved team, reclaiming dominance on both the regional and state stages. The revival was powered by a determined senior class and a renewed sense of purpose.
“The bounce back was very refreshing, but it wasn’t surprising,” senior Sam Schweickhardt said. “Last year we were left with no senior leadership. We were beat down, embarrassed, and disrespected by other teams and parents. We didn’t hang our heads — we stepped up. I’m incredibly proud of my class. We trained hard, set examples, and made an effort to support the younger guys. We improved, and we brought the underclassmen with us.”
That senior leadership — from Nick Sanders, Sam Schweickhardt, Marshall Wilson, and Anthony Passafiume — helped restore the standard of excellence St. X cross country is known for.
“A ten-mile run before you hit the weight room is not an easy day, but our seniors showed our younger runners that it’s necessary and even enjoyable,” said Coach Yochum. “Their consistent commitment is the open secret to the greatness of our team, and they bring our young runners to our demands with joy.”
The final varsity seven — Nick Sanders (Sr.), Matthew Frick (Jr.), Sam Schweickhardt (Sr.), Marshall Wilson (Sr.), Ian O’Bryan (So.), Baron Staab (Jr.), and Anthony Passafiume (Sr.) — brought pride back to the program and set a tone for years to come.
With a strong mix of senior leadership and rising underclassman talent, the 2025 Tigers didn’t just return to form, they reminded everyone what St. Xavier cross country truly is.
