The 2024-25 college football season is underway, and several teams’ preseason worries have become realities, while former CFB powerhouses are poised to return to glory.
1: Marcus Freeman gets upset once again
Notre Dame under head coach Marcus Freeman has tallied several high quality wins in his three year tenure. Even with this big game success, Freeman has a serious concern with losing gimme games early in the season. In Freeman’s first season they suffered a loss to Marshall in his home debut game. This past week the Huskies of Northern Illinois came into Notre Dame Stadium and took down the Irish in a 16-14 shocker. This loss left the college football world questioning whether the Irish are once again overrated.
2: Once again, Colorado is fraudulent
The Buffaloes and coach Deion Sanders were faced with a hard reality on Saturday in Nebraska after losing 28-10. This score looks significantly better than how the game actually played out and Nebraska bullied the Colorado offensive line upfront. Travis Hunter was one of the lone bright spots, tallying 10 catches for 110 yards. There was never a doubt the Buffaloes would have playmakers outside, but the concerns upfront came to fruition on Saturday night. Shedeur’s lack of protection going along with their inability to run the ball lead to a disastrous offensive performance. The Buffaloes will face an uphill battle the rest of the season to become a ranked team.
3: Cats offensive line is no match for the South Carolina pass rush
Going into this season with new offensive line coach John Wolford the wildcats offensive line had gained preseason buzz. The Cats have several new starters including Gerald Mincey (RT) and Jalen Farmer (RG) both SEC transfers. The “big blue wall” was the premier part of the best Mark Stoops teams earlier in his tenure. In recent seasons the offensive line has become a constant problem for Kentucky. The Gamecocks have talented edge rushers, but allowing five sacks in front of a sold-out Kroger field raises red flags for Mark Stoops’ program.
4: Michigan is already feeling the effect of losing Harbaugh
The Wolverines welcomed the top 3 ranked Texas Longhorns to the big house for College Gameday. There was offseason concern surrounding the Wolverines and new head coach Sherrone Moore. He was elevated from offensive coordinator to head coach this offseason after John Harbaugh’s departure back to the NFL. Michigan is clearly missing his coaching ability and their steady quarterback from a season ago in JJ McCarthy. Michigan has lots of concerns for the rest of the season that will make it very hard to compete in a reloaded Big 10.
5: Nebraska may be back
The Cornhuskers welcomed Colorado into Memorial Stadium where over 85,000 fans showed out. Nebraska fans have desperately wanted to return to glory since they won their fifth national title in 1997. Nebraska which was once a college football powerhouse hasn’t seen a level of success anywhere near this in over 25 years. With Matt Rhule at head coach and five star true freshman QB Dylan Raiola the Cornhuskers are poised to have a strong season. The Nebraska defense and especially the big guys up front proved to be too much for Coach Prime and the Buffaloes. Nebraska fans and donors are hungry to return to relevancy and they are on a promising track with this team.
