Recently, Louisville and Kentucky both hired new head coaches to lead their basketball programs, which is bringing many changes. The most prominent being that each team will be made up of entirely new players for next season. The majority of the players that Louisville’s Pat Kelsey and Kentucky’s Mark Pope are getting are coming from the transfer portal.
The transfer portal is a hot topic in college athletics recently. It allows any college athlete to transfer to a different university and be immediately eligible to play in the next season. Both Kelsey and Pope are navigating through this insanity in an attempt to build tournament-level teams in year one at their new school. 4. Koren Johnson - Washington
Koren Johnson is a 6 foot 2 shooting guard that was the PAC-12 Sixth Man of the Year this past season at Washington. Johnson spent two years at Washington and will have two more years of eligibility remaining. This season, Johnson averaged 11 points and shot 37% from three point range. Louisville fans can expect Johnson to improve next season since he is more experienced and will play more minutes at Louisville.

3. J’Vonne Hadley - Colorado
J’Vonne Hadley is a 6 foot 6 small forward that started every game for Colorado last season. Hadley, who started his college basketball career at Northeastern, spent the last two seasons at Colorado. Hadley had a limited role in the offense last season for Colorado, but he was highly efficient when he was used on offense. Hadley averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds per game last season. He is a solid three point shooter and good free throw shooter, but the majority of his points come from inside the arc.

2. Chucky Hepburn - Wisconsin
Chucky Hepburn is a 6 foot 2 point guard that has started every game for Wisconsin during his three seasons with the Badgers. During his time at Wisconsin, Hepburn was a good passer, stealer, and three point shooter. Hepburn averaged 9 points, 4 assists and 2 steals per game last season. Pat Kelsey needs a guard like Hepburn to lead his offense. Therefore, expect Chucky to be the starting point guard for Louisville next season.

1. Terrence Edwards Jr. - James Madison
Terrence Edwards Jr is a combo guard that is 6 foot 6. Edwards is transferring in as a graduate student after playing all four of his seasons at James Madison University. Edwards most successful season came this past season when he won the Player of the Year Award for the Sun Belt Conference. He averaged 17 points per game with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Edwards is a solid three point shooter, but primarily got his buckets from the mid-range. Edwards will be a great fit as the off-ball guard in Pat Kelsey’s system at Louisville.

4. Amari Williams - Drexel
Amari Williams is a 6 foot 10 center from Nottingham, England. Williams has started every single game in both of the last two seasons for Drexel and is transferring into Kentucky as a graduate student. As a great rebounder and shot blocker, Williams averaged 12 points with 8 rebounds and 2 blocks per game last season. In addition, Williams had a high usage rate at Drexel when he was on the court. This sets him up for success as the center in Mark Pope’s offense at Kentucky, where he will not be as heavily relied on to generate offense.

3. Koby Brea - Dayton
Koby Brea is a 6 foot 6 small forward that is an elite level three point shooter. Brea spent four years at Dayton and will have one year left at Kentucky. This past season, Brea averaged 11 points per game and shot nearly 50% from three point range. In addition, Brea was one of the most efficient shot takers in the country last season with over 71% of his shots being an efficient shot. Kentucky fans can expect Brea to be a key player of the bench that will be solely in the game to shoot threes.

2. Andrew Carr - Wake Forest
Andrew Carr is a 6 foot 10 power forward that spent two years at Delaware before spending two years Wake Forest. Carr will have one year of eligibility left at Kentucky. This past season, Carr averaged 13.5 points, 7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. Carr is a solid three point shooter who is also a good rebounder and shot blocker. Kentucky fans can expect Carr to be a key big man for the Wildcats next season.

Lamont Butler Jr. is a 6 foot 2 point guard that spent four years at San Diego St.. Butler started all but two games for the Aztecs over the past three seasons and played a critical role in San Diego State’s Final Four run in 2023. Last season, Butler averaged 9 points, 3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Butler is a elite stealer and passer that gets most of his points from two point range. Butler is a massive get for the Wildcats because they get an experienced point guard that can run the offense well.
