Last weekend, Hillmen United and AC Ted, teams full of St. X athletes, faced each other in the Mockingbird Valley Boys Indoor Soccer Championship. Hillmen United came out victorious despite having half the soccer experience of AC Ted and the other teams in the league.
After a disappointing regular season, Hillmen United finished 0-2-4. However, during the tournament, Hillmen United’s Joe Karem showed up ready to play. He finished with five goals and five assists.
“It was light work,” Karem said. “My hard work over the weekend payed off.”
Hillmen United was an ultimate Cinderella story going into the tournament as second-to-last seed. Everyone counted them out, but they knew what they had to do to play the other St. X team in the title.
AC Ted finished the regular season 3-1-2 and earned themselves the second seed in the tournament. AC Ted’s Trip Campbell and Beckham Murrow showed up for AC Ted, finishing with three goals and two assists each.
Both teams won their first two games of the tournament, leading to an epic title match. Hillmen United’s Frankie Klein started the game with a quick goal just a few minutes in. AC Ted’s Sam Tyler tied the game a few minutes later and it was back and forth from there.
With only three minutes left in the game, Hillmen United looked like they had secured the win after Max Newman and Henry Frank combined for three goals, making the score 5-2. But AC Ted did not give up. With quick goals from Will James and Trip Campbell the score was 4-5 with 20 seconds left.
With only four seconds left, AC Ted drew a free kick in a dangerous position, giving them a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately for AC Ted, the free kick ended unsuccessfully and Hillmen United was crowned as champions.
