After running low on St. X sports story ideas, I thought about the swim team winning state again. Even though state was three weeks out, I figured I could start writing it anyway.
Winning state is nothing new for the Tigers, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that 36 consecutive state titles (60 overall) is wildly impressive.
During the state meet, the Tigers won 9/12 events, set five state records, and scored 562 points finishing 383 points ahead of second place.
Senior Johnny Crush, Junior Thomas Mercer, and Alex Thiesing led the Tigers to victory. Together, they added six individual titles and swept in the relays. Crush placed first and set a state record for the 100 yd freestyle finishing with a 42.70.
Because of their continuous dominance in Kentucky, the Tigers set their goals higher and use the state meet to set personal bests and qualify for nationals. With their performances during the state meet, the Tigers have set themselves up for a good look at claiming their fourth national title.
