Recently, the St. Xavier varsity soccer team traveled to Evansville for their annual team road trip. Leading up to it, the Tigers collected many donations for the Catholic Charities Migration & Refugee Settlement Program. Catholic Charities plans to furnish over 25 families with basic start-up supplies upon their arrival to Louisville this month.
“Service in the community is what keeps us humble,” Coach Andy Schulten said. “Every day we strive to be the best soccer team, but more importantly we want to be the best people we can be.”
Items that the players collected were linens (twin bedding, pillows, bath towels) and cleaning and hygiene items (mops, brooms, small trash cans, toilet brushes, laundry soap, personal hygiene items, baby wipes). The players even got other students involved inviting them to help with the donation as well.
The Tigers took two resounding wins against Evansville Reitz Memorial High School on Friday afternoon and Providence High School (Ind.) on Saturday morning. The final scores were 3-1 and 6-2.
“Our team grew greatly with the Evansville trip, and it was awesome to bond with our brothers not just on the field, but off of it too,” said senior team captain Frankie Klein. “Going forward, I know this trip will act as a cornerstone to build off of in the playoffs.”
The Tiger soccer team is currently in the regional tournament, with a Trinity matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and the regional final on Thursday, Oct.12. Be sure to go cheer on the Tiger Soccer team on their road to state!
