Junior at St. X, Jack O’Bryan, has made a huge impact in his school and the City of Louisville through his work with Louisville’s Youth Philanthropy Council. O’Bryan first heard about the program through his older brother, Sean, who had participated in it as a junior.
“Sean had told me about all the good things about it, so it piqued my interest,” O’Bryan said. “I also knew I wanted to help my community in an impactful and meaningful way.”
O’Bryan spends his Saturdays meeting with a group of about fifteen students to interview nonprofit organizations and helps choose which one corresponds with their mission statement.
“Our mission statement is decided on the second day of class, and it is basically what we are in a nonprofit,” O’Bryan stated.
O’Bryan’s group focuses on helping the elderly and they are the first LYPC group ever to do so.
“Many people in my group had strong feelings for the elderly who are nearing the end of their lives and want to help them,” O’Bryan said.
O’Bryan said his experience was eye-opening to the importance of service.
“I have learned how difficult and sad life can be for the elderly nearing the end of their life who may not have any money or family left,” O’Bryan said.
Giving up his Saturdays can be a challenge, but it is worth it.
“The feeling of fulfillment after each meeting always makes me grateful that I chose to do it,” O’Bryan said.
O’Bryan’s work should serve as an example for all St.X students. Service can help others in an incredible way and give them new way to look at life. Not only is service a way to help others, but also a way for people to become a better person. O’Bryan has made a tremendous impact serves as a role model for St.X and the the school community.
“LYPC has given me a new outlook on life,” O’Bryan said. “It shows me all the good that is out there.
