The St. X golf team accomplished a feat that has been on their minds since 2019, winning the region. This was no easy feat, as they had to overcome multiple setbacks.
In last year’s region championship, the Tigers had a heartbreaking loss to CAL by one stroke. Last year’s loss wasn’t the only thing motivating them. The Tigers haven’t won the region championship since 2018.
This year’s region championship was a completely different story. The Tigers dominated their competition, winning the whole tournament by 13 strokes.
“It was a big accomplishment to win the region, especially winning by 13 shots. We haven’t done it since 2018 and it’s the best region in the state,” senior captain Will Stuart said.
The Tigers were led by junior Luc Kelty, who shot a 67. This finish allowed Kelty to come in 2nd place overall. Senior Thomas Evans and junior Brody Alexander followed Kelty, both shooting 69s and finishing tied for third.
Even though they had an amazing outing, the Tigers faced some adversity during a crucial time of preparation. Seniors Thomas Evans and Will Stuart both had appendix surgery days apart from each other. Both seniors are crucial members of the squad, as both are in the Tigers’ top five.
“I got surgery on Thursday and I was already back on the golf course on Tuesday,” Thomas Evans said. “During my time off, all I did was lay around and rest so I could have the chance to play in regionals. For me personally, I didn’t think I had a chance but I shot 72 and 70 in two practice rounds and that showed our coach I was ready to play.”
For the golfers, they now have their eyes set on something that hasn’t been done since 2016: State Championship. “We won the hardest region in the state so we’re confident about moving through the semi state and eventually heading to state,” Will Staurt said.
The Tigers went on to win semi-state on Oct. 1. Next up is the State Championship tournament on Oct. 10 and 11 at Bowling Green Country Club.
