What started as a simple interest, has turned into a pursuable passion. Senior Matthew Lynn has really made an impact on the broadcasting community here at St. X. Throughout the past four years, Lynn has called football, soccer, lacrosse, and also calls basketball games on Big X radio.
For many, the idea of calling a high school game might be intimidating, but for Lynn, it was a natural fit. Matthew’s love for broadcasting began at a young age.
“I always loved sports and knew I wanted to be involved with them since I was 7 or 8 years old, I always had a great sports mind, being able to remember everything,” Lynn said.
It wasn’t long before Lynn was behind the mic gaining experience. What started as a chance to call a game, quickly started something more significant. The first game Lynn called was a double header featuring JV and Varsity soccer vs Manual.
“I remember being super nervous and shaking in the chair once I unmounted the mic for the first time,” Lynn said.
Lynn’s most infamous highlights consist of calling the Pink and White game.
“It was so unique and cool to be a part of it even though I wasn’t on the field,” Lynn said. “Over 4k people were watching and we didn’t have a lot of information to prepare with. It was really up to our own discretion and I did really well.”
For Lynn, preparation is key to delivering a great performance on game day. Lynn starts by reviewing stats, rosters, and key storylines so that nothing gets overlooked. For football games, Lynn puts the jersey number and stats on a paper for a quick reference. Once at the stadium, Lynn walks down to the field to maybe grab a coach or a player for a quick quote and then goes to set up his equipment and go over stats to be fully prepared for when the game starts.
Looking ahead, Lynn plans on taking his talents to the next level by attending the University of Cincinnati where he will be broadcasting Bearcats baseball.
“I will be able to hop into a Power Four level and have bearcats baseball all to myself, broadcasting not only on the radio but on ESPN + is something that I am super excited about and looking forward to,” Lynn said.
In the meantime, Lynn plans on doing a paid internship with Louisville City where he will help out with the radio.
“I am super excited about the opportunity to hop into a professional setting,” Lynn said.
Matthew Lynn’s journey in broadcasting has been historic. From calling St. X games to prepare for major opportunities at the University of Cincinnati and Louisville City, Lynn has worked hard to get to where he is.
Lynn’s love and dedication have made him stand out in the broadcasting community. As he takes the next steps in his career, there is no doubt that Lynn will continue to inspire others with his talent.
