As the 2024-2025 basketball season draws to a close, Indiana University is actively seeking for a new head coach to replace Mike Woodson. Woodson announced his retirement effective at the end of the season. Woodson was a former Hoosier all American and NBA coach. Over his four year tenure, he had an above average win percentage and huge rival wins against Purdue, but the team faced challenges in advancing to the NCAA tournament. This coupled with the recent decline in performance compared to predecessors, led to his decision to step down as head coach.
Although the Hoosiers have a had a substandard season compared to the norm, fans can look forward to the hiring of the new head coach. The search for Woodsons replacement has generated speculation and exhilaration. Several prominent names have been considered to be the replacement including Mike Cronin (UCLA), Scott Drew (Baylor), Brad Brownell (Clemson), and a few others from prominent power four schools.

As an Indiana fan, I think Brad Brownell will be the next head coach due to his notable track record during his tenure at Clemson including an extensive coaching experience. Based off multiple reports, his name has been floating around with ties to Indiana. Being a Hoosier himself and with multiple coaching jobs in the area he is a top candidate. His coaching style is also one to like because of his belief in a strong defense, something Indiana has been missing for the past few years with Woodson. He brings stability, toughness, and a winning identity- something Indiana basketball has lacked of for years. Also, a coach with who is younger and has time to establish a new identity, like Brad Brownell, is something Indiana desperately needs.
In my opinion, any coach that shows he can restore the toughness and grit of the Hoosier identity will get the job. Based off of past years performances, the Hoosiers lack a competitive defensive identity and a coaching staff that develops talent. Indiana has recruited well in the past few years with players like Mackenzie Mgbako, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and Bryson Tucker, yet they cant seem to find out how to fit them into the system. Additionally, the offensive system under Woodson was inconsistent; little ball movement and poor shooting.
As Indiana continues its sub-par season, the anticipation for a new coach will hopefully keep fans on their seats. This coaching job will be crucial in shaping the future of Indiana basketball and, hopefully, to some extent bring back those memorable 1970-80s Hoosier glory days.
