Throughout St. X there are plenty of legendary teachers. Some connect to their students through their youth. Some connect to their student through their storytelling. Some connect to their students through their personality. But, a few stand out and connect to their students because they went through the same experiences as their students. The teachers that went to St. X and came back to give us their gift of teaching. Who are some of these teachers?
Mike Glaser
Coach Mike Glaser graduated from St. X in 1970. He then attended Bellarmine University, where he graduated in 1974. After that, he returned to St. X in August of 1975, beginning his legendary coaching career, during which he won seven state championships in football. In his first year, he taught English I, English III, English IV Composition, and Comic Fiction. This year, he transitioned into a new role, teaching speech. Throughout his career, he has coached football, baseball, track, and basketball. He has also been involved in the Pink and White Dance Team, Pep Club, and the Tiger Mentor Program.
Andy Porta
Coach Andy Porta graduated from St. X in 1985. From there, he attended Murray State University, where he earned his B.S. and M.A.T. in mathematics. He returned to St. X during the 1992–93 school year. In his first year, he taught Algebra 1, Excel Math, and AB Calculus. Today, he teaches Honors Algebra 1, Honors Pre-Calculus Dual Credit, and Pre-Calculus. He has coached in a variety of roles, including 16 years of basketball, five years of JV baseball, and 13 years as the head varsity baseball coach. He continues to lead Tiger Baseball and has guided the team to four state championships.
John Jefferson
Coach John Jefferson graduated from St. X in 1989. From there he went to Bellarmine where he graduated in 1989 and got his B.A. in math. He came back to St. X in the 1998-99 school year. During that time he was also getting his Masters in Education from the University of Louisville. His first year he taught Algebra l and Geometry. Now he teaches Algebra I, Honors Precalculus part 2/Honors Calculus part 1, and AP Calculus AB. He was the speech and debate moderator from 1998 to 2006. He coached Freshman Baseball from 2000 to 2006. He was the head Varsity Baseball Coach from 2007 to 2011. He was the S.A.C. (Student Activities Council) Moderator from 2012 to 2014. He has also been the Ultimate Frisbee Moderator from 2014 to present.
Michael Reynolds
Mr. Michael Reynold graduated from St. X in 1993. He then went to Bellarmine where he got his B.A. in English. From there he left the United States to get his MA in Theater Practice from University of Exeter, England before coming back to the states to get his M.A.T. from the University of Louisville. He returned to St. X in the 1999/2000 school year. That first year he taught Junior and Senior English, which he is still teaching to this day. Around St. X he has been involved in the theater program, Gentlemen’s Breakfast Club, Stop Motion Animation, and Book Club.
Michael Brockman
Coach Michael Brockman graduated from St. X in 1997. From there, he went to Centre College, where he played football and earned his B.A. in English. He graduated in 2001 and immediately returned to St. X to teach and coach. “I remember vividly the first day of school and practice. I went to the coaches’ locker room to change for practice and was shocked at how utterly exhausted I was from the day of school,” said Mr. Brockman. He also attended the University of Louisville, where he earned his M.A.T., as well as I.U.S., where he obtained his Rank I certification. He coached football for 17 seasons (serving as the freshmen head coach and a position coach for QBs, RBs, and WRs). Additionally, he coached track for 10 seasons. Beyond athletics, he has been involved in Mock Trial, Ultimate Frisbee, and intramural basketball.
Jim Kraeszig
Coach Jim Kraeszig graduated from St. X in 1985. From there, he attended Bellarmine University before transferring to Indiana University Southeast (IUS), where he earned his master’s degree. He began teaching at St. X in 1994, where he taught Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Environmental Science. “Teaching my first year was like riding a roller coaster—battling to grade everything, staying one day ahead of my students, working until 10 p.m. each night, and sometimes being back at St. X at 5 a.m. to type up a quiz or assignment,” said Coach Kraeszig. Now, he teaches Human Anatomy and Physiology as well as Integrated Physical Science (IPS). He has coached a variety of sports, including freshman football, wrestling (all levels), and powerlifting. He was also a part of the Tai Chi Club for two years.
Bill Bornschein
Mr. Bill Bornschein graduated from St. X in 1974. From there, he attended the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1980 with a Master of Divinity. He then went on to earn his B.A. in Theology from Xavier University. In his first year back at St. X, he taught Sophomore New Testament, Junior Ethics, and Social Justice. “My first year was a real wake-up call that St. X is about dynamic change. In the 10 years since my graduation, St. X had added so many more opportunities,” said Mr. Bornschein. He now teaches Psychology, Global Issues, Philosophy, World Religions, Christian Life, Ethics, and Social Justice. While at St. X, he has been involved with the Red Cross, Young Democrats, and the Christian Awakening Retreat.
