Catholic Schools Week is underway, and the one of the most highly anticipated events of the year is near. The annual Faculty Basketball Game makes its return to this festive time.
Last year’s showdown was a beating, as the Green Team opened a can of you know what against the Gold Team, winning by a score of 41-18.
The leading scorer was Mr. Caudill (Green Team) with fifteen points, going 3/5 from three, but teammate Coach Doherty took home the Xavier News MVP Trophy with a stat line headlined with eight points and five rebounds.
This year, both generational talents are back and look to make this a game to remember.
Mr. Caudill is the guy opponents have nightmares about. His specialty is shots from behind the arc because of his unlimited range, since Caudill never sees a shot he doesn’t like. Like his game or not, the former Teacher of the Year is a winner.
While Mr. Estephan had a disappointing showing last year, he’s spent countless hours in the gym hitting up pick up games with colleagues. When Estephan gets going, he’s hard to stop. While he isn’t afraid to crash the boards, this forward can catch fire from the three point line at any time, and if he does, good luck.
Coach Durbin would be the runaway favorite for a Defensive Player of the Game award for good reason. Last year, he notched five steals and ranked as the most efficient player in the game. Durbin will undoubtedly play a massive part in this game.
Coach Doherty is a bully on the court who can run by just about anyone. The lacrosse head coach filled up the stat sheet in his Faculty Game debut, and he is once again looking to prove supremacy as the best player among the staff.
Coach Faust had six shots from the FT line last game and most certainly can draw a foul anytime he touches the ball due to his physicality. If he can get his shots to fall (went 1/6 last year), Coach Faust will be in the thick of MVP conversations.
Let’s not forget about Mr. Yarborough. While he scored zero points in last year’s contest, there is no reason to believe this trend will continue. This guy’s form is pure. A beauty. When he isn’t in the music room, Yarborough is in the gym working on his game.
Mr. Caudill and Coach Doherty. Those are the only two winners of the young MVP award for the Faculty Basketball Game. Will a new face win bragging rights until next year?
Rosters are revealed Wednesday morning.
