When deciding what makes a great group Halloween costume, four main characteristics are considered: recognizable costume, difficulty to achieve, flexibility for group size, and style. Halloween is quickly approaching and for groups in dire need of a group costume idea here are some fantastic options.
1. Grown Ups Cast
The Grown Ups Cast includes Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Shaquille O’Neal, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and more. With all these options, this costume is very flexible for group size and easy to achieve. Most of the characters wear normal attire, so for some, their costume may already be in their closet. One of the only drawbacks of this costume is the lack of style it provides. On a 10-point scale, this costume would earn a 9.8, just falling short of a perfect 10.
2. The Avengers
Another well-known pop culture group, the Avengers, is a Halloween classic and has helped countless groups in need of a costume. I like the recognizable look the costume provides, as well as its flexibility and style. Due to the fact that some people may not like wearing full-body costumes, this loses a few points. The lack of originality also takes away some points for the Avengers. Overall, with characters like Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, and many others, this costume is reliable and customizable. With all these factors taken into account, the Avengers earn a 9.2/10.
3. Heisman Trophy Winners
Unlike the first two costumes, this is a pretty unconventional Halloween group costume. Some of the things I love about this idea are the costume’s style and flexibility for group sizes. This costume has unmatched flexibility and therefore earns a lot of points in this area. You and your group can either take the route of wearing the players’ jerseys or wearing outfits that go with the players off the field. The options are really limitless with this costume, though it can be a little challenging to obtain sometimes. This may be a great conversation starter since most people will not know what you are dressed as if you’re not in uniform. There are a few drawbacks to this costume, but overall, the ingenuity of it earns an 8.8/10.
4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The iconic symbol in pop culture, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, comes in at 4th due to its notable appearance and style. This costume loses some points due to the lack of flexibility for bigger groups. The four turtles—Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo—provide a classic look and are easily recognized by most of society. It saves you the awkward explanation of your costume yet can spark conversations due to its eye-popping colors. The Turtles come in at 8/10, losing points due to the lack of flexibility and being unsuitable for larger groups.
5. Power Rangers
Rounding out my list, the Power Rangers come in at the 5 spot and represent a strong costume idea. With all of the factors that I take into account in my rankings, the Power Rangers fall just below the Ninja Turtles. One of the huge reasons points are deducted for the Power Rangers is the full covering of the face. I think a fully covering costume is uncomfortable for many, and most people don’t like covering their face. Also, with only 5 original Power Rangers, this limits the group size flexibility of the costume. They make up for these shortcomings with the costume’s style and recognizable look. Overall, this is still a very good group costume, earning a 7.5/10 rating.
Honorable Mentions: Pirates, Toy Story, Scooby-Doo, and Mario Kart.
