October means one thing for baseball fans: playoff time. And for the 2018 St. X grad, Trey Sweeney, he is experiencing this feat early in his young career.
Sweeney has proven worthy of being a solid starter for the Tigers’ infield, racking up 4 HRs, 24 base hits, 17 RBIs, and 7 walks in 36 games played. Needless to say, his impact at the season’s end has been evident.
Sweeney has contributed to Detroit’s first playoff berth in a decade, making some keys plays along the way, including a game-saving diving catch against the Orioles. After sitting with a 0.2% chance to make the playoffs in mid-August, the Tigers went 31-13 in their last 44 games.
The Tigers open up postseason play tomorrow (10/1) on the road against the Houston Astros in the AL Wild Card, a best of three game series. First pitch is schedule for 2:32 PM; the game is televised on ABC. Game two is Wednesday, also at 2:32 PM on ABC. A potential game three would be on Thursday, at the same time and on the same network.
It seems as if Sweeney has found his groove with the red-hot Tigers, being an impactful player in their championship quest.
