The Ice Tigers wrapped up their historic regular season with back-to-back shutout wins on their way to an 18-9-2 record–St. X’s most wins in a season.
“Breaking the single season wins record is a huge accomplishment for this team and speaks to the hard work the players and coaches have done,” head coach Patrick Sullivan said.
What makes this team unique is its unmatched chemistry compared to other teams in the state. The majority of the players have been playing on the same club teams since elementary school. These connections on the ice have contributed to one of the most successful seasons in Tiger Hockey history.
In the best season of his coaching career, Sullivan has decided to retire from coaching after this year. Coach Sullivan has been a crucial part of this program for decades. He played for the Ice Tigers in his high school days—known for his missile clap-bomb and physical presence. After his high school career, Sullivan continued playing hockey at the University of Kentucky.
Coach Sully has certainly been a part of the highs and lows of the program. At the start of his tenure the team was getting beat by twenty plus goals and now the team is winning games by double-digits. This truly goes to show how far this program has come with Coach Sullivan at the helm.
“We are riding a wave of success right now, and when that wave crests, our guys will be able to look back on this season and see that we are the high water mark for the program,” Sullivan said. “We hope to cap off this momentous season with a state championship.”
The Tigers are hot into the state tournament as they are unbeaten in their last six games. St. X will be the two seed in the state tournament. Needless to say, expectations are high as the Ice Tigers look to bring home their first state championship since 2004.
