Most students are able to enjoy a warm and cozy winter with heat in their homes, but this is not the case for everyone in the community. Many low income families can not afford weathering services that maintain temperature throughout the year. Project Warm offers these low income families free weathering services that reduce the cost of heating and cooling while keeping them warm for the winter.
Each year in November a group of St. X students helps fix up these houses by fortifying their windows and other areas of vulnerability. St. X students are given the task of going to these houses and fixing them up. Usually that means fixing the houses’ windows. The windows are usually cracked, allowing the wintry air to seep into the house during the winter months. The volunteers tape plastic wrap over the windows to block out the cold. When summer comes around, the house owners can take the plastic down.
“The wonderful thing about Project Warm is that it allows students to build relationships with the families we serve,” Mr. Kresse said. “It’s a mutual sharing of lives that benefit the homeowner and the volunteers.”
If you are interested in doing Project Warm, St. X does it every year in November. It is a great way to serve the community!
