After claiming their 24th state title in 2020, the Tigers have yet to win another state title. For two years in a row, they have come in second place and they’re looking to reclaim state once again.
“For us to bring home a state championship will require us to grow and work as a complete team,” Terkhorn said. “Once we do that we will be unstoppable.”
Missing last year’s star runner Sammi Hattab (currently at UK) challenges the team to step up and push themselves to win. The four senior captains, Tristan Hindorff, Brodie Terkhorn, Hayden Willman, and Nick Zoglman play a crucial role in the team’s success and in keeping the team focused.
“To be a team captain is to be a leader, to set the right example for those around you,” Willman said. “Consistency is not only how consistent you are with your workout, but in all the things outside of running.”
Keeping the team together and focusing on the little things is how this team plans to take down the top teams. To help keep the team ready Coach Yochum helps prepare them mentally. Staying strong mentally is almost as important as staying strong physically and can be the difference in a big race.
“Our guys learn to respond well to deep discomfort,” Coach Yochum said. “We practice that 6-7 days a week, and we discuss what pushes your mind in the right direction when you’re approaching pain.”
The team is looking very strong this year, but with some tough competition, the Tigers will need to work hard and come together as a team to win.
State this year is one of the most competitive years in a while with multiple teams having a strong chance of winning,” Hindorff said. “We have to make sure that we are at our best in the race to ensure we have the best chance of winning.”
With the Tigers practicing every day and pushing each other, they feel as good as ever about achieving their goal.
