This game is personal for the Tigers (2-0) as they take on the Bulldogs (2-0) for the first time since last year’s heartbreaking, season-ending one-point overtime loss in the second round of the playoffs.
This year’s St. X team has a different makeup than last year. The Tigers’ main strong point is on the offensive side. They bring returning stars and some new faces, especially at the receiver position. Senior quarterback Trevor Havill is running the show and looks to impact the rematch through the air.
Through the first two games Havill has thrown for 283 yards five passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. Marlon Harbin who is only a sophomore brings varsity experience and is an explosive kick returner who returned an 84 yard touchdown in the first game against Floyd Central. He also has nine receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Junior receiver Cam Hollaway also poses a threat with six receptions for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Other playmakers are juniors Kyle Krupp and Anthony Barbee.
The ground game is also strong this year with senior running back Davis Yates who has rushed for 190 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown and Manny Grey who is a solid junior contributor as well.
Stopping Male’s powerhouse offense who just came off a dominating win against Ballard 36-3 will be a challenge. The Bulldogs’ offense includes three star wide receiver Max Gainey, and quarterback Kolter Smith who will make the defense battle for all four quarters.
The Tigers also bring key returning defensive players such as three star defensive lineman Ashton Jones who recently committed to Southeast Missouri State. Jones has 14 tackles on the season and is leading the defense who is allowing 9.5 points on the year. Sam Crum brings a hard hitting presence at the safety position along with defensive lineman Tyler Neal and cornerback Jason Dunn.
Carter Guillaume and Tommy Rosenbarger lead the offensive line and will play a huge role this season. Guillaume, a state champion wrestler as well, also recently committed to Southeast Missouri State with teammate Ashton Jones.
This is a must win for the Tigers to prove they can compete with anyone in the state and the Rage Cage will surely be out in full force.
