The Tigers have already dominated many golf tournaments so far, winning the Rocket Invitational and Battle of the Bluegrass. The most notable storyline for the well-rounded team is freshman sensation Luc Kelty.
The St. X golf team is led by the impressively talented Coach Finney who had a remarkable career in Division 1 golf playing on the number one ranked LSU golf team in 1987. Senior leaders this year are Winn Scherer, Trevor Meyer, Ty Ruttinger and Parker Conover.
It is true that Kelty scores the lowest on the golf team; however, Kelty, just like any varsity player, needs to adapt to the higher skilled competition and contribute to the overall team score.
“I haven’t played team golf like this before so I’ve been making sure everything is all good so I can contribute to the team,” Kelty said. “I’ve been doing anything I can to win.”
Kelty hopes to make it far this season and do whatever he can for the Tigers. But with the tough terrain and even tougher competition, many things can come into play. Although he is younger than most of his competitors, Kelty is mature with his process and knows how to control his emotions.
“I always just take a deep breath and calm myself down because if I am not calmed down, many things can go wrong,” Kelty said.
Kelty’s dominance on the links inspires his teammates to perform their best. The Tigers took home the team win and Kelty captured the individual win at the St. Elizabeth Invitational last Saturday. Coach Finney’s Tigers look to continue this wave of success and have high hopes for the state title this year.
